Backstabbr Site Rules

These Site Rules explain how to play fairly on Backstabbr. They are part of our Terms of Use, and breaking them can lead to enforcement action up to a permanent ban. We may refine these rules over time as we learn from real cases; we'll announce material changes.

One Account Per Person

Each person may have only one account. Specifically, you may not:

  • Hold or control two positions in the same game.
  • Create or control more than one account, whether directly or through someone else.
  • Play in a game that you also run as gamemaster.
  • Log into or share an account that isn't yours.

What Counts as Multi-Accounting

Multi-accounting is one person secretly controlling more than one player in a game, or using more than one account to gain an advantage. It includes feeding one of your accounts to another, coordinating your own accounts against other players, and using a gamemaster role to help an account you control.

Shared Connections

If you genuinely share a household or network with another player — family, roommates, a school, or an office — that's fine, and we don't want to penalize honest players. You may play in the same game as someone you share a connection with only if every other player in that game knows about the shared connection and agrees to it in advance. This is usually fine in a private game among friends. Joining a public game with someone you share a connection with, without the other players' knowledge and consent, is prohibited and is treated as multi-accounting or collusion.

Treating Other Players With Respect

Diplomacy is a game of negotiation, deception, and betrayal; lying to an ally, breaking a promise, or coordinating an attack are all fair play. These rules are about how you treat other people, outside the fiction of the game. Being ruthless in the game never justifies mistreating a real person. You may not:

  • Harass, bully, or target another player, or engage in persistent unwanted contact after being asked to stop.
  • Threaten real-world violence or harm against anyone; threats against someone's units or position in the game are fine, threats against a person are not.
  • Use slurs or demean anyone based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, or similar characteristics.
  • Post, send, share, or link to sexual or sexually explicit content of any kind anywhere on Backstabbr, including private messages, in-game press, profiles, and game names. You are also forbidden from making sexual advances, requests, or comments toward another player, or to sexualize another player in any way. This isn't a "keep it tasteful" rule: sexual content has no place here at all.
  • Share, or threaten to share, another person's private or identifying information ("doxxing"), or try to identify players in real life against their wishes.
  • Encourage or pressure anyone to harm themselves.
  • Impersonate another player, person, or Backstabbr staff.
  • Spam, flood, or deliberately disrupt games or discussions.

If someone crosses these lines, you may report it. Serious threats of real-world harm may be reported to the appropriate authorities. Breaking these rules can lead to warnings, removal from games, or a ban at our discretion.

Other Fair Play

To keep games fair and fun, you also agree that you will not:

  • Communicate about a game outside that game's own mechanisms in order to gain an advantage.
  • Ally or act based on out-of-game relationships ("metagaming") rather than on what happens in the game.
  • Carry grudges from one game into another.
  • Collude with other players in ways the game isn't meant to allow.

No Evasion

Trying to hide who you are or get around enforcement — creating new accounts to evade a suspension or ban, or spoofing or disguising your device or network — is itself a serious violation and can make a ban permanent.

How We Detect and Review

To protect fair play, we use technical and automated means to look for prohibited conduct, including analyzing the devices, browsers, and networks used to access accounts (described in our Privacy Policy). Automated signals never act on their own: a possible match is reviewed by a person before any action is taken. We don't disclose the specific methods or evidence we use, because doing so would help people evade them.

Consequences

Depending on the violation and its severity, we may warn you, restrict features, remove you from games, void or unrank affected games, or suspend or permanently ban your account and all accounts associated with you. We may take these actions with or without prior notice.
